The major polymer clay manufacturers have assured us that polymer clay is non-toxic when used as a craft material and used as directed. And as anyone with a pet knows, just because something smells bad doesn’t mean its toxic.
That being said, sometimes the smell of baking polymer clay can be a bit much. If you’re sensitive to the odor, there are a few things you can do.
- Switch brands. Each one smells differently. NOTE: Kato is an excellent clay, but a lot of people struggle with its odor.
- Cover your clay when you bake (you may need to increase baking time, though.)
- Move your clay oven to an unused room.
- Open a window for ventilation.
- Use an exhaust fan that vents outside of your home.
