It’s becoming harder to be alone. We have busy lives and most of us live in cities around people and noises and distractions. Our phones pull us into lines of thought that we didn’t generate. Our friend groups are no longer local, but worldwide and instantly connected.
Solitude used to be something we welcomed a respite from. But now it’s something we have to intentionally carve out space for. If you don’t plan it, it doesn’t happen.
And without the emptiness that being alone offers, we don’t hold space for ideas to spontaneously generate. And contrary to the oft-repeated sentiment, there IS such a thing as a new idea. Nobody else has your nuance.
And these nuances are subtle. Fleeting. Timid. And often very, very quiet. Are you leaving room for yours? Or do they get drowned out in the noise of your very full life?
