Why are we disappointed when we can’t sit down at our work table and spontaneously generate a completed project with perfection?
It’s a process. Simple as that. When you first come up with an idea, it’s seldom in its final form. You will toss it around in your head for a while. You might make sketches or talk it through or even mess with some samples. There will be a few trials. Some of the ideas will evolve to the next step. And some of the ideas will go extinct.
I made this design for a swap a few years ago and it was a lesson in evolution for me. It took several trials, prototypes, and (yes) failures to make something I was happy with. Everything I make is like this. Trials, prototypes, and experimentation. This is what is meant by having a practice.
It’s not a linear idea→outcome process. And over time, it becomes a lifelong practice of honing your craft. Embrace it!
Want to learn more about how this design evolved? You can read the article here. It’s also a constant theme in Blue Bottle Insiders.
I spoke at length with Sage Bray Varon about this topic on episode No 15 of The Sage Arts Podcast.
And I don’t know about you, but I love that this is a journey. Enjoy the ride.
