Recently, the esteemed polymer clay artist and teacher, Helen Breil, shared some time with us and gave us a personal “wander” through her artwork and how her work has changed, grown, and evolved over time. Deep dives into an artist’s evolution are always fascinating because you get to hear their though processes and learn the story being their work, their inspirations, and why they do what they do. Helen’s work is instantly recognizable for its bold lines, rich textures, and saturated colors. And while Helen’s artistic style is uniquely her own, what’s most remarkable about her body of work is how every discovery brought with it a course or tutorial that revealed new ways of using the medium of polymer clay.
Helen’s most recent course was triggered by the polymer clay earring boom…but in typical Helen style, this tutorial is about SO MUCH MORE than earrings. The Space Between is a new course showing how to make 25 variations of earrings using a unique modular approach to earring form. The earrings consist of a stud on the ear and the lower part of the earring attaches behind the earlobe. Like all of Helen’s courses (which you’ll see examples of in this video), this isn’t so much about the style but the construction methods.
