Melissa Terlizzi – Daisy

Note: Unfortunately, Daisy is too shy and delicate to travel and cannot appear in person, but she is so wonderful that I decided we had to include her in the catalog!

Fortunately, her creator, Melissa Terlizzi, has donated another piece, ‘Frog,’ which is included in the exhibition.

Artist’s Statement: Daisy doesn’t mind the cold mornings as long as her neck stays warm!

Daisy was a challenge in a way that my dressed-up frogs and rhinoceros weren’t. I don’t want to make an animal head and stick it on a human body; I want the animals to be realistic, top-to-bottom (before putting ridiculous clothes on them!)

Daisy’s turtleneck sweater was the weirdest-shaped thing I’ve ever knit, but it fits her perfectly; balloon sleeves cover her long front legs, and a buttonhole at the back allows her tail to poke through. (Her skirt has a buttonhole for her tail, too.) The fabric was a perfect find at the fabric store — it’s covered in safari animals!

Dimensions:  8½”h x 6″w x 9½”d (216mm x 152mm x 241mm).
